NorthWest Initiative was founded in 2000 to improve the overall health of residents of the north
and west sides of Lansing. Our dedicated staff members provide a range of services,
information and referrals to individuals with a wide range of needs including access to health
care, food, transportation, and housing.

NWI outreach services include seminars and programs for the community, from home repair to
nutrition counseling. NWI outreach also leads community improvement and advocacy initiatives
on issues of concern to residents.

NorthWest Initiative serves Cherry Hill, Downtown, Renaissance, Westside, Genesee, Old
Oakland, Old Forest and Walnut neighborhoods

















Outreach services include:
  • Free food distribution including Panera Bread ~ WALK IN Thursdays, Noon to 3 (Call to
    confirm)
  • Food Stamps (MiBridges), emergency needs and other services
  • Coordination with services provided by NWI’s  re-entry program, ARRO.
  • Health services for eligible residents
  • Ingham Health Plans, MIChild, Plan First, Medicaid
  • Referrals, sign up and information
  • Clothing, shelter, transportation and mental health and substance abuse
  • treatment services for which you are eligible.
  • Community improvement projects and volunteer opportunities
  • Community Gardens,
  • Call for information about plots
  • Workshops and educational programs
  • Free tax preparation, cooking and food demos, home repair, chronic disease
    management and more!

NWI Now Distributes
Supplemental Bread

NWI now distributes Panera
Bread commodities every
week on
Thursdays between
12:00 and 3:00.  Residents in
need may pick up breads and
bagels at our North
Neighborhood Center
location,
1012 N. Walnut, or
you may call 517-999-2895 to
schedule a pickup time.

Outreach programs focus on what
residents said they needed during
intensive resident “summit” sessions.
These needs include:

  • Access to healthcare and health
    insurance.
  • Access to fresh, healthy foods.
  • Tools for creating “asset
    independence” and breaking the
    cycle of poverty.
  • Jobs, services, and other businesses within walking distance of home.
  • Safe neighborhoods and business areas.
  • Engaging and uplifting experiences for children.
NWI's Free Tax Preparation

NWI’s Free Tax Preparation service from January to April
helped residents receive more than $4.5 million in previously
unclaimed tax credits and rebates since 2004.  

Call 2-1-1 to schedule your appointment today! Free tax
services are conducted from January – April, 2011.
You will be asked to fill out short surveys before the service is
provided.

Canvassing Your Neighborhoods!

Outreach staff canvass door to door in west and north
Lansing neighborhoods to identify residents’ needs for
outreach services and programs. We will be knocking
at your door in the coming spring, summer and fall
months. Please take time to answer our questions and
