NWI's Free Tax Preparation service started in 2004, and has
helped residents receive more than $4 million in previously
unclaimed tax credits and rebates.  Taxes will be prepared

FREE Tax Preparation Site at our New Location

This years FREE Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site
we be in one of our new offices at 1012 N. Walnut St., Room
107 (inside the old Walnut School).  With the help of the IRS
and the Asset Independence Coalition (AIC), we are able to
offer certified income tax preparation at no charge for low to
moderate income individuals (see qualifications below).   Call

What do I bring?
    Documents to bring to the
    VITA site to have your
    taxes prepared:

  • Photo ID
  • Social Security cards for
    you, your spouse, and
    your dependents
  • Birth dates for all people
    on the tax return
  • Current year’s tax
    package if you received
    one
  • Form W-2, W-2G, and
    1099-R (wage and
    earning statements from
    all employers)
  • Copy of last year’s
    federal and state tax
    return
  • Routing numbers and
    Bank account numbers
    for Direct Deposit of your
    Refund

    Other documents you
    may need:

  • Form 1099 – Interest and
    dividend statements
  • Total amount paid for
    Child Care and the
    provider’s identifying
    number
  • If you are married and
    filing a joint tax return,
    both spouses need to

Families and Individuals that Qualify

Families with one child who earn less than $33,995 in 2008
(or less than $36,995 for married workers) are eligible for a
credit of up to $2,917.

Families with two or more children who earn less than
$38,646 in 2008 (or less than $41,646 for married workers)
are eligible for a credit of up to $4,824.

Workers without a qualifying child who earn less than
$12,880 in 2008 (or less than $15,880 for married workers)
are eligible for a credit of up to $438.

Child Tax Credit is up to $1,000 per qualifying child.  The
Additional Child Tax Earnings Threshold is $12,050 in 2008.

How can you claim the EITC?  

Free tax preparation sites are available throughout the tri-
county area.  Volunteer Income Tax assistance (VITA) sites
provide IRS trained volunteers to prepare and file tax returns
for free.  

You Earned It! – You Keep It!

Workers can get back some or all of their federal, and for the
first time, their state income tax that was taken out of their pay
during the year.  The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a
refundable federal, and now state, income tax credit for
working families and individuals.  The maximum credits this
year are $5,280, with a Michigan credit of up to $502.80.

Seeking Volunteers!

We are also looking for volunteers to prepare taxes for the
upcoming 2008 tax season.  Volunteers commit to preparing
taxes for four hours a week in exchange for IRS certification
and experience in tax preparation.  Volunteers are also
recognized by prominent community leaders at a celebratory
dinner at the end of the tax season.  For more information on
