Welcome to the Lansing Youth Gardening Coalition Website!
A group of youth garden leaders has come together to create a coalition to provide support and resources to youth gardens in the Greater Lansing area. YGC is looking to reach out to youth who are or want to be part of the youth gardening effort.
Why Promote Youth Gardens?
The National Gardening Association states that gardening:
Promotes responsible Earth stewardship
Promotes physical and emotional health
Enhances local and global communities
Infuses beauty into our lives
Provides extraordinary learning environments
Garden-Based Nutrition Education
Children are more likely to eat something when they make it themselves. From the seed to the kitchen; eating food that they made with their own hands influences behavior more anything else can. Combine that with a variety of hands-on educational activities and repetition of positive experiences involving fruits and vegetables, and you will find children trying foods they never tried before. Then there is the added bonus of what time outside in the garden can do for a child’s physical and emotional health. The opportunities for your child to grow with the garden are endless. There is a sense of pride and accomplishment for all every step of the way, from germination to harvest.
