4-H Horticulture Resources
Help kids explore the basics of plants and plant science – plant growth, soils, plant varieties, pest control measures, equipment
and gardening techniques – through 4-H plants, soils and gardening projects. Young people can learn about crop and soil
sciences wherever they can grow plants, whether that’s in a basket, on a small garden plot or on an acre of land. Introduce kids
to the magic of the earth and help them harvest a bushel full of knowledge and experience.

2009 Youth Farm Stand Toolkit
The Youth Community Food initiative of the CS Mott Group was initiated to further the engagement of youth in all aspects of
sustainable food systems and community food projects.  This tool kit is designed to guide a group from start to finish through
learning about, planning and putting into action a local food project— a youth farm stand. It is based on three years of experience
and lessons, as well as feedback from 16 different Michigan communities that participated in the Youth Farm Stand Project
between 2005 and 2008, and the CS Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems at MSU.

Garden Project Resources
The Garden Project helps both home and community gardeners in the Lansing/East Lansing area to grow and preserve their
own fresh vegetables. They also organize gleaning surplus produce from area farms!  During the growing season, The Garden
Project operates a Resource Center, which provides seeds and plant starts to registered gardeners as well as information and a
tool lending library.  Contact the Garden Project for help with any of your gardening needs!

Growing Minds:  The School Garden-Based Nutrition Education Curriculum Based on the Michigan Department of Education
Grade Level Content Expectations
The Northwest Initiative's Food Systems Project has been teaching children about gardening and eating healthy in the Lansing
area for over five years.  Throughout those years, we developed a curriculum to assure teacher involvement in our program, as
each lesson enhances the learning needs of students at their grade level.  We have 15-20 activities for grades K-4 in English
Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  FSP is supplying this curriculum at no charge, although we are trying
to track all who use this curriculum for our records.  If you feel that this curriculum could be of use to you,  please contact Joy at
