Summer Youth Engagement Program Update

Wow, our neighborhood kids have been busy this summer!
From the planting of our garden to harvest time, all of our
youth have done work they can be proud of. Our activities
included gardening (our sunflower ‘house’ is finally in
bloom, come check it out!), learning about financial literacy
with Consumers Professional Credit Union (thanks Marie!),
and learning to sew with Ms.Ginger Petty. A special thanks
goes out to her for her special dedication and patience.

We also organized several fundraisers to finance field trips,
including our trip to Michigan’s Adventure. Last, but not least,
a big thanks goes out to Ms. Jeana-Dee Allen and her troupe
of volunteers for the great leadership and dedication to their
very popular photography program. This program was
educational in many ways, and helped ensure that our youth
will always have something to remember this summer by.
Thanks to all of our parents, volunteers, drivers, donors, and
most of all, neighborhood kids!
Watch for upcoming
announcements on our Summer 2011 Youth Enrichment
Program!

Cameras in the Capital City Exhibition

From July 24-August 29 more than 65 youth ages 6-17 had
their images displayed in the Cameras in the Capital City
Exhibition at the Creole Gallery. Hundreds of visitors came
out to support the youth through this fundraiser. Thank you
Lansing for encouraging the young photographers! You voted
Mikayla’s and Alexus’s images Best in Show and they, along
with the rest of the students, have been so proud of what they’
ve created. Thank you for your very fine support and to the
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for their part in
making the show a success.

The Walnut Youth Community Garden

The former Walnut Youth Community Garden broke ground in
spring of 2009 outside of our offices at 1012 N. Walnut in
Lansing.  Nearly 50 children enrolled in our youth programs
participated in the planting, maintenance and harvest
throughout the year.  This year the garden is moving to Grace
Lutheran Church.  Click the link above for more information
and photos of the 2009-2010 garden.
